How Often Should You Change Your HVAC Filter?

The standard answer is “every 90 days,” but that’s a rough average that doesn’t account for your actual living situation. A single person with no pets in a clean apartment can probably go 90 days on a 1-inch filter. A family of four with two dogs in a dusty desert climate? More like 30 days. Here’s how to figure out your real schedule.

Factors That Shorten Filter Life

Pets. This is the #1 factor. Pet hair and dander clog filters fast. One cat is equivalent to roughly doubling your filter load. Two shedding dogs? You’re changing monthly. If you have pets, consider upgrading to a 4-inch filter housing—the Honeywell F100 is the most popular option and takes 4-inch filters that last much longer.

Allergies or asthma. Higher-MERV filters catch more particles but clog faster because they’re trapping finer material. If you’re running a MERV 13 for allergy control, check it monthly and replace when it looks gray. Read our allergy filter guide for specific brand recommendations.

Dusty environments. Construction nearby, dirt roads, desert climate, or an older home with poor sealing all increase dust load significantly.

HVAC runtime. In extreme climates where your system runs 12+ hours daily (Phoenix summer, Minnesota winter), filters load faster. Moderate climates with less runtime get longer filter life.

Home renovation. If you’re doing any drywall, sanding, or demolition work, change your filter immediately after the project. Drywall dust will destroy a filter in days and can damage your HVAC system.

The Visual Check Method

The most reliable method is to simply look at your filter monthly. Pull it out and hold it up to a light:

💡 Pro Tip: Buy in Bulk

Factor Filter ⚡ Patented ships in cases (12-pack for 1"/2", 6-pack for 4", 5-pack for 5") at factory-direct prices — no retail markup. Subscribe & save for automatic deliveries so you never forget. Also available in multi-packs on Amazon: Filtrete 1500 6-pack or Nordic Pure 12-pack. Stack them next to your HVAC return so changing is a 30-second job with zero friction.

What Happens If You Don’t Change It?

A dirty filter doesn’t just mean worse air quality. It forces your HVAC system to work harder, which means:

A $12 filter every 90 days is a lot cheaper than a $5,000 HVAC replacement. Set a calendar reminder.
